What Do You Do For a Living?

And why I struggle to answer this

A little over 5 years ago I was a hairstylist. I had been one for over 25 years. It was easy to answer the “what do you do for a living” question. I cut hair. Boom. Quick and simple. But today when I get asked that question it’s not so easy to answer anymore.

I was at the airport a couple of weeks ago and met an elderly gentleman who was rather chatty. I’m ok with that. I love meeting new people and talking too! I told him about my sweet life in Guatemala and how I left Canada 3 years ago.

He seemed interested to know more, especially, how I support myself.

That’s when I got hit with the million dollar question. “What do you do for a living”?

I’m a writer, I tell him. The next question threw me off guard and suddenly I realized telling people I’m a writer might not be the best response.

“Oh”, he says, “what have you published”?

Um……………

I mean I could tell him I’ve published about 300 blogs on my site, another 2500 as a ghostwriter on someone else’s site, about 200+ stories here on Medium and about 100 guest posts on high authority sites but I have a feeling that’s not what he’s looking for.

So apparently when you tell people you are writer they automatically think you are some best selling author. Oh how I wish. Not just yet Henry. Soon.

But it stopped and made me think. What do I do for a living?

It’s hard to describe it in a simple word. I’m a writer. That takes up about 75% of my work load. I run a website, a Pinterest account, my Medium account and a Facebook page. I could also add Instagram and Twitter to the mix but in all honesty, I suck at those two.

I create Pinterest images for my blogs and inspirational posters for my Facebook page and for Pinterest too.

I guest post and also do some freelance writing work.

I inspire and motivate people around the world to live happier lives, flick fear, embrace change, grow a pair, etc.

I feed hungry little bellies every chance I get.

And I even still do hair every now and then.

So what do I do for a living? How do I sum all that up in a quick and simple answer? I can’t.

I do lots of things for a ‘living’ but mostly I live and love. That’s what I do. But I can’t tell people that. They wouldn’t get it. I do what makes my heart sing ❤

I do what I love for a living. What do you do?

I love you ❤

Peace and Love
