Stop Calling Me a Volunteer

Before I go off on my rant I want you to understand these are my views and my opinions and I absolutely mean no disrespect to ‘volunteers’ around the world. I am one of them. But I get really uncomfortable when people call me one.

I also don’t mean any disrespect to anyone who isn’t a ‘volunteer’.

Read on….

A couple of years ago I was at a huge networking event hosted by Dean Graziosi, Brendon Burchard and Ethan (damn if I can remember his last name..anyway). There was probably 1000 people at this event. At one point Dean had asked anyone who was in the audience if they were a volunteer of any kind to please stand up.

I didn’t.

My friend elbowed me hard and said “Iva stand up, you’re a volunteer!!!” (ugh). I stood up and the crowd cheered and clapped. (ugh again) The only thing this did for me was make me angry. Why aren’t all of you standing up?? Why isn’t every single person in this room a ‘volunteer’??

Not only that…..Why this label? Why do they put this label on us? Why do we have to be called out and recognized for good deeds but the bigger question here is “why isn’t every human being on the planet a ‘volunteer’??

‘Volunteers’ do good deeds from their hearts, or at least I’d like to think that that’s why they ‘volunteer’. Because they want to. Because they want to help and give. From their heart. It brings them joy. People helping other people (or animals or the environment or whatever).

I have a small confession to make though. Years ago I used to call myself a volunteer. I would pride myself on it. Look at me and all the good I do. I even patted myself on the back for all the good I did.

Fast forward to now, here I am living in a third world country surrounded by poverty and helplessness and it makes me stop and wonder, why aren’t more people ‘volunteering’? Where is everyone? Why is there is so much poverty when there are so many million and billionaires in this world?

I don’t get it.

Aren’t we all healers and helpers? I mean, isn’t that what we are here for? To live, love, share, give, help, encourage, support, be kind…. Aren’t we?

Or are we not? Are there so few people in the world who actually help that they have to put a label on us? Classify us?

“I present to you this group of helpers called the ‘volunteers’. They stand out above the rest because there aren’t many of them and we want to recognize them for their efforts”.

What’s the rest of the world doing? Why aren’t they part of this ‘volunteer tribe’? Does nobody have one hour a week to spare to help others? Or 15 minutes a day? Anybody? Nobody? Somebody?

Why can’t every person on the planet be a ‘volunteer’? I don’t want to be known as a volunteer. I want to be known as a loving and caring human who likes to help others. That’s all. Nothing more. Don’t put a label on me. It makes me sad for the rest of mankind.

Find an hour. Be a helpful human. Change starts with you ❤

Peace and Love
