How I Made $300 on One Story

And how you probably won’t.

We’re almost at $300 on one story. Time to celebrate!

I need to be upfront and honest about this story. I put very little thought into it. I wrote completely off the cuff. I felt little to no inspiration and just needed to get something up on Medium.

My early days of Medium

I found Medium and just started writing about the shitty life I lived and threw in a few motivational stories. I wanted people to know who was behind all the painful words.

I also tried my hand at some lighter topics too. I wrote a few light-hearted humorous stories (or at least I thought they were) and hit publish. I didn’t think anything of them.

I had a hard time coming up with things to write about every day. I belonged to a Medium group where people were raking in the cash monthly by writing daily, sometimes 3 times a day, and I thought well if they can do it so can I.

I was wrong. I couldn’t do it and it was exhausting.

But the reason I couldn’t do it was that I also run a website (now two!) and all the social media content and accounts that go with it. I mean, there are only so many hours in a day.

Sleep is necessary.

So I threw in the “I’m writing a million stories a day and gonna be a 7 figure Medium blogger” idea and decided to simply write on Medium when I had time.

Seems these days I rarely have time but I’m still here alive and kicking.

So this story

In about 30 minutes I whipped up this funny article, hit publish, and carried on with my day as usual.

It was instantly curated in the Self category. That’s cool. Mind you, curation means jack shit these days but for some reason, this story still keeps bringing in readers and money.

One thing you should know about this story is that it’s old as dirt. I wrote it on December 23rd, 2018. Almost two years ago.

And to date, it’s brought in close to $300 with over 6K views. I know, pathetic right?

But for some reason unbeknownst to me, Medium pushes it out every now and then and I make a wee bit more money each day from it. Yay me.

There’s no such thing as luck

I’m not sure why this article keeps getting pushed out and making me money but I’m happy it does. Some would say “Oh lucky you” but luck has nothing to do with it really.

I actually cringe when people tell me how lucky I am with the success I’ve had in my life in the last few years. Seriously? You think luck got me this far? Ooph! 🤦‍♀️

Now, let’s get back to the fact that I made close to $300 on this article. That is the lifetime earnings. It’s taken me almost two years to make that much on this story.

Two years. Good grief.

Now I’m not shitting on that. I mean, I’m happy to make anything here on Medium.

But two years? Oy.

Each month, depending on the month, I make between $5–40 on this story. Enough to buy a shitty, strong, and overpriced Starbucks coffee a day.

Now that was back in the days when curation actually meant something. It doesn’t mean much these days.

These days unless you write often, and have thousands of followers, you pretty much need to publish your stories in pubs to get noticed. So I’m kinda thankful this story still gets noticed. Thanx Medium.

By the way, here’s the story in question:

But you won’t make $300 a story.

You will probably make hundreds or thousands of dollars a story. And it probably won’t take you 2 years to do that as it did me.

You can probably make well over $300 a story and quite possibly in a month! There are a million “How to make money on Medium” stories you can read that will help you with that.

This isn’t one of them.

It really all depends on how amazing your story is, how many followers you have, and if you submit it to an outstanding publication.

I really don’t know. I don’t have all the answers. Actually, I have no answers. All I know is that I’m happy that I get paid every month for doing something I love.

Writing and entertaining, inspiring, and motivating people.

Even if it takes me two years to make $300 on a story.

Lots of eggs and lots of baskets

I used to think Medium was going to make me rich until I realized you have to work your ass off for that to happen. I have way too many irons in the fire at this point in my life to really work Medium to get rich.

I’ll pass.

But what I have learned early on in the blogging world is that you can’t put all your eggs in one basket. I know some do and that’s cool but good luck with that.

At any given time, your basket can catch fire, and then you’re fucked. And you won’t like it. Trust me on that.

The little money I make on Medium monthly now will cover one of my blogging expenses, depending on how much I make. Some months it pays for my email service provider, other months it pays for my website hosting.

I now have about 8 streams of income that bring me in enough money to live like a queen in Mexico. Yes, some of them keep me fairly busy while others require little effort and still bring me in a nice little stash each month.

You can’t rely on one thing to support you. That one thing can crash and burn overnight and the next day you wake up and got nothing. Ouch. Don’t do that.

There are several ways to bring in passive income if you are creative and determined enough to make it work.

  • You can write mini eBooks and show people how to do something
  • You can make fun little printables and sell them on Etsy
  • You can make money with affiliate marketing if you have a site or a Pinterest account
  • You can do work on places like Fiverr and Upwork
  • You can be a VA
  • You can add a “Buy me a coffee” button on your site
  • The possibilities are endless!!

Your success story is up to you

You can earn as little or as much as you want. It all depends on how bad you want financial freedom and how willing you are to work hard to make it happen.

But I gotta say, $300 for half an hour worth of work is still pretty decent.

Here’s to your success!
