I remember when it happened. Almost like it was yesterday. I wrote my ‘Dear John’ letter, packed up what few belongings I had and walked away from my last abusive relationship. I had nothing to my name but a shred of hope and a morsel of faith.

The life I left behind was a comfy one.

We lived in a big house in a posh neighbourhood. I didn’t want for anything. After I had closed up my hair salon on the main street in downtown, my partner built a salon in the house for me so I could still work and bring in some money, not to mention, maintain my sanity.

By then it was already too late for me. My clients were fed up and I lost many. I was barely making any money at all from home and what little money I did make went to outstanding bills.

The beginning of the end

I could see the end coming. The end of everything. My in home salon, the big house in the rich ‘hood, the toxic relationship, my financial affairs, my self esteem, self confidence, self worth. Everything was coming crashing down on me.
