Friendships Shouldn’t Be Hard
Can’t we just meet cool humans and go do shit with them?
Awhile back I wrote a piece about looking for a friend. The one thing no one tells you about being an expat is that it can be difficult to make friends.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, you meet a shit ton of people along the way but friends? Ya. Not so much.
One of my readers made these comments to that article:
I don’t do friends. That breaking up shit is too painful so I stopped it probably 30 years ago.
And then there are times — most of the time, really — that I’m content to not have to work at a friendship.
Her comments made me sad.
I understand the breaking up shit. I did that with many of my friends when I left Canada. When you become a traveler, you also become a slightly different person in everyone’s eyes.
And suddenly no one can relate to you anymore, except other travelers. And then you lose all your friends from ‘back home’.
It’s weird.
Oh, here’s the article by the way
