First of all I have to admit I’m rather ashamed of myself. I’ve been down in Guatemala for over 6 years now and still can’t speak Spanish fluently. Shame on me. I should be so much further ahead then I am now.

Ah well, bit by bit or “poco a poco” as they say down here.

So as I go along and learn, so many words sound kinda the same. Many words are way off when you translate them. This is where the trouble begins. I stutter and stammer a lot of the time and when I simply can’t figure out what I’m trying to tell them, Google translate is my best friend.

Sometimes I point and grunt and hope they know what I want and they’ll tell me what the word is. Then I make them repeat it at least 10 times so I don’t forget for next time.

Next time comes and I forget the damn word. This happens more than I care to admit.

On the rare occasion, the data on my phone runs out and I desperately try to convey my message as best I can. Pointing and grunting comes into play again.
