10 Soul Sucking Responses to “How Are You” and Why I Won’t Ask You Anymore

The answer is never as simple as you think or wish it to be.

I do care about people — a lot. I mean, I care about dogs and cats more, but I def do care about people.

But, a couple of years ago, I turned 60.

And while I still do care about people, I care less and my patience for bullshit has been reduced to 0. It’s a liberating thing, to be honest.

I noticed something, though, and I had an a-ha moment (it takes me a while sometimes). When I meet up with people, one of the first things I say is, “Hi, how are you?” Don’t we all?

And then they would tell me — and I would cringe — and by the time I got back home I was pissed at myself for asking in the first place.

“Iva, you don’t care that much. Why do you even bother asking? Haven’t you learned by now that people WILL tell you exactly how they are, and it’s never good?

But, some of the things people will say when you ask them — oh, dear Lord. I’m not that invested in your answer. I need to make that more obvious.
